The history of Birchanger Primary School

Birchanger School was first founded in the 1860’s. Up to 1900 the school had as few as 26 pupils and as many as 88, about what it is now is 109 on roll. It was not unknown for children to have time off to help with the harvest in September and October.

School trips have been taking place for many years. It’s known that in the 1920’s there were trips to the seaside and to the Empire Exhibition in London.

The old school building still exists in the village, and the opening of the new School building was opened by the Bishop of Colchester on Friday 19th February 1982 and in 2019 Bishop Roger came back to see us.
